{"id":16690,"date":"2025-03-15T13:28:31","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T13:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16690"},"modified":"2025-04-01T22:46:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T21:46:30","slug":"soca-2025-agm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16690","title":{"rendered":"SOCA 2025 AGM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong data-rich-text-format-boundary=\"true\">SOCA 2025 Annual Review &amp; AGM <\/strong>was held on <strong>Thursday 13<sup>th<\/sup> March<\/strong> at <a href=\"http:\/\/Branch Detail | Royal Naval Association(opens in a new tab) royal-naval-association.co.uk\/branches\/no-06-area\/welwyn-garden-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RNA Welwyn Garden City<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2024-Geff-2-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"173\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The <strong>2025 AGM<\/strong> was held on <strong>Thursday 13th March.<\/strong> The meeting was held at the <strong>RNA club WGC<\/strong> in addition it was also streamed as&nbsp; a <strong>ZOOM<\/strong> meeting for those members who couldn&#8217;t attend in person. The technical issues that we have on earlier meetings seemed, in the main, to be overcome and the whole session run very smoothly. A talk that was enjoyable and humorous with many stunning photographs. The meeting was well attended both in person and on ZOOM.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">September<\/span>:<\/strong><b>&#8211;&nbsp; <\/b><u>The planned presentation had to be delayed to another time due to illness.<\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16271\"><br><\/a><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16271\">However<\/a><\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16271\"> in its place SOCA held a RNLI themed evening with videos and quizzes.<br>The SOCA Commodore also made a donations to the Hitchin &amp; District branch of the RNLI<\/a><br><\/b><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">October<\/span> :-<\/strong> <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16332\">Swinging, Spinning and Wobbling: pendulums, gyroscopes and Inertial Navigation<\/a><\/b>&nbsp; <br>A well attended meeting at the RNA W.G. City where <strong>Jeremy Batch<\/strong> presented in person.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">November<\/span> :-<\/strong> Topic was a presentation on the steam tug <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=15368\">CHALLENGE<\/a><\/b> which is the last surviving example of a large purpose-built, Thames ship-handling steam tug, where she was based for her entire working life.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">January<\/span> :- Sailing adventure in Patagonia. <\/strong><b><br><\/b>From Puerto Montt to Puerto Williams and around Cape Horn. Three months in an incredible place to sail. Dolphins and Penguins followed them on their trip.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">February<\/span><i> :- Exploring the Rivers of Western France.<\/i><\/strong><b><i><br><\/i><\/b><strong>Paul Bragg<\/strong> discussed some of the exciting adventures that he &amp; <strong>Elaine <\/strong>have had navigating the rivers of <strong>Western France<\/strong>, in their <strong>Island Packet 380 sailing boat, Jennie B<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Social Events, Quiz Events and Training<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">April<\/span> <\/strong><b>SOCA<\/b> held a <b>celebration lunch on Saturday the 13th of April 2024<\/b> to mark the <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?page_id=1382\">40th Anniversary<\/a><\/b> of its inception. The event was held at the Cowper Arms. The event was very well supported with numerous ex Commodores in attendance.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">June<\/span><\/strong><b>,<\/b> As is usual in the sailing season many members were away sailing taking advantage of the good weather. Therefore, an informal drinks and chat was held at the RNA in Welwyn Garden City.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">July<\/span><\/strong><b>. <\/b>Due to most members being on holiday or boating an informal get together was held at the RNA in Welwyn Garden City in place of the normal meeting.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">July<\/span><\/strong><b>. <\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16154\">BBQ\/ Dinghy Sailing<\/a><\/b>. A BBQ &amp; Dingy Sailing event was held at Paxton Lakes Sailing Club. A very good turnout with SOCA Members &amp; BOSG Members enjoying good weather and with some wind for the sailors.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">July<\/span>.<\/strong> A total of 18 persons took to the skies on a Glider Experience event.&nbsp; Very Good flying conditions and it was getting dark before the planes were put away.&nbsp; A very successful evening.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">August<\/span>.<\/strong> A social event was held at the RNA in W G City. where future events was discussed.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">November<\/span>.<\/strong> <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16359\">SOCA held its Laying Up Lunch<\/a><\/b> at the<b><a href=\"https:\/\/cowperarmsdigswell.co.uk\/\"> Cowper Arms in Welwyn North<\/a><\/b>.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">November<\/span>. BOSG<\/strong> Laying Up &amp; Christmas Lunch at the Prince of Wales Bedford.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">December<\/span><\/strong><b>. <\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/?p=16464\">SOCA 2024 Photo Competition<\/a><\/b> The annual nautical themed <b>SOCA<\/b> photo contest which included a pre-Christmas social, a <b>Commodore\u2019s fund<\/b> raffle plus<b> RNLI<\/b> fund raising with Merchandise sales and donations. The best photos from this event will be in the 2026 SOCA calendar.<br><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">February<\/span>. It has not been presented for a number of years however the committee decided to reinstigate the award this year and awarded the <strong>Belaying Pin<\/strong> to <strong>Just Fleur<\/strong> &#8211; (Bob Leonard) for Stalwart participation and comradeship at the Summer East Coast Cruise 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Commodore\u2019s Cup :- Awarded at the discretion of the Commodore<br><\/span><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16740 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Commodores-Cup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"101\"><\/p>\n<p>Awarded to <strong>Peter Sackett<\/strong> for his outstanding efforts in amalgamating SOCA and BOSG. Unfortunately Peter could not attend so he will be presented with it at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing Commodore (2024\/2025) confirmed his Charity Choices for his year were the <a href=\"https:\/\/rnli.org\/\"><strong>RNLI<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grafhamwatersailability.com\/\"><strong>Grafham WaterSailability<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16961 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RNLI-Cheque-2025-300x104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"200\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16962 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Sailability-Cheque-2025-300x106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"201\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>2025 AGM Proceedings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16714 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20250313-WA0002-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"89\" height=\"117\"><\/p>\n<p>The new Commodore then ran the <strong>2025<\/strong> <strong>AGM<\/strong>, going through Apologies, 2024 Minutes, Treasurer&#8217;s Report, finalising with the election of new officers.<br>His last action as SOCA Commodore was to thank all his fellow officers and committee members for their work during the year and for the presenters and organisers of events that made his year as Commodore during the 40 year anniversary an enjoyable experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16718 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20250313-WA0006-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"158\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Commodore then stood down and handed over proceedings to Andrew (President) who conducted the appointment of the new Commodore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>The new&nbsp; Flag Officers for 2025\/2026 were then endorsed by the membership at the AGM.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Terry Branson<\/strong>&nbsp;elected as Commodore<br><strong>Stewart Warren<\/strong> as Vice Commodore<br><strong>Paul Comley<\/strong> as Rear Commodore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG-20250313-WA0008-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16720\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Left to Right Paul, (Rear Commodore), Stewart (Vice Commodore) and Terry (Commodore 2025-2026)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16707 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.socasailing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"77\" height=\"91\">The new Commodore then addressed the meeting and informed the meeting of his chosen charity. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nci.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>National Coastwatch Institution.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NCI watchkeepers provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. When people find themselves in trouble, they are there to alert HM Coastguard and direct the appropriate rescue services to the casualty.<\/p>\n<p>High technology and sophisticated systems such as radar and telecommunications have vastly improved safety at sea, but there is no substitute for a watchful pair of eyes. Accidents do happen and a computer or technology cannot spot a distress flare, an overturned boat, a yacht with problems or children or adults in trouble. That is why their lookouts and watchkeepers are an often-unseen lifeline to all those who use our coastal waters, footpaths and coastline.<\/p>\n<p><b>HISTORY<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>In 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast near a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch.
