We have attended a full day RYA sea survival course at an environmental tank. Other courses are available and there is a multitude of information online.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rya.org.uk\/course-finder\/basic-sea-survival-certificate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"www.rya.org.uk\/course-finder\/basic-sea-survival-certificate\">www.rya.org.uk\/course-finder\/basic-sea-survival-certificate<\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsac.com\/training\/skill-development-courses\/safety-and-rescue-courses\/rnli-diver-sea-survival-workshop\/#tab-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"www.bsac.com\/training\/skill-development-courses\/safety-and-rescue-courses\/rnli-diver-sea-survival-workshop\/#tab-1\">www.bsac.com\/training\/skill-development-courses\/safety-and-rescue-courses\/rnli-diver-sea-survival-workshop\/#tab-1<\/a><br \/><strong>RNLI Safety information<\/strong><br \/><strong>Float to live:<\/strong><br \/>1 Tilt your head back submerging your ears<br \/>2 Relax and control your breathing<br \/>3 Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat<br \/>4 Your legs may sink \u2013 that\u2019s OK everyone floats differently<br \/>5 Practise floating at a supervised location like a swimming pool<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/float\">https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/float<\/a><br \/><strong>Cold water shock:<\/strong><br \/>If you enter the water unexpectedly: Take a minute. <br \/>The initial effects of cold water pass in less than a minute so don\u2019t try to swim straight away.<br \/>Relax and Float to Live.<br \/>Keep calm then call for help or swim for safety if you\u2019re able.<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/know-the-risks\/cold-water-shock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rnli.org\/safety\/know-the-risks\/cold-water-shock<\/a><br \/><strong>Yachting &amp; Motorboating:<\/strong><br \/>Safety checklist:<br \/>Always wear an appropriate lifejacket.<br \/>Always carry a means of calling and signalling for help.<br \/>Ensure there is an emergency action plan in place and everybody has an onboard briefing (in particular on the location and use of the safety equipment, including the spare kill cord for powerboats).<br \/>Get the right level of training for your craft.<br \/>Always check the weather and tide times.<br \/>Make sure someone ashore knows where you are going and who to call if you don\u2019t return on time.<br \/>Always drive your boat at a speed that is appropriate to the weather conditions and to the environment you are operating in.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/choose-your-activity\/yacht-sailing-and-motorboating\">https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/choose-your-activity\/yacht-sailing-and-motorboating<\/a><br \/><strong>Scuba Diving:<\/strong><br \/>6 safety checks for scuba diving:<br \/>1 Be fit to dive: Be fit to dive \u2013 cold water will put extra strain on your body. Always consider your cardiac health before diving and get any concerns checked out.<br \/>2 Check your diving equipment: At the start of the season make sure all your diving gear is in service and ready for another year\u2019s diving.<br \/>3 Plan your dives: Check the weather and tides. Tide tables and sea conditions for the UK and Ireland at <a href=\"http:\/\/metoffice.gov.uk\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"metoffice.gov.uk\">metoffice.gov.uk<\/a>.<br \/>4 Always complete a buddy check: No matter how experienced you are, or however many times you have dived with your buddy, don\u2019t skip the buddy check. It could save your life, and theirs.<br \/>5 Be spotted: All divers should carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) or delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) on every dive to aid their visibility to all surface craft.<br \/>6 Carry a means of calling for help: If something goes wrong, how will you call for help? Consider carrying a personal locator beacon (PLB) or similar device in a waterproof canister.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/choose-your-activity\/scuba-diving\">https:\/\/rnli.org\/safety\/choose-your-activity\/scuba-diving<\/a>.<br \/><strong>SAFETY EQUIPMENT<\/strong>:<br \/><strong>Lifejackets<\/strong><br \/>Crouch straps, Spray hood, whistle, light<br \/>A well fitted and suitable lifejacket can rotate you and keep your airway clear of the water.<br \/>Preventing Downing\/Secondary drowning.<br \/>Help position in water (Heat Escape Lessoning Posture)<br \/><strong>More safety equipment<\/strong><br \/>First Aid MOB kit<br \/>Communication Grab bag<br \/>Flares <br \/>Liferaft<br \/>Fire extinguishers <br \/>PLB\/Epirb<br \/><strong>WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY:<\/strong><br \/>Are you in distress?<br \/>Serious and imminent danger to life<br \/>Collision causing foundering, life threatening injury, fire, or MOB<br \/><strong>This is a mayday call<\/strong><br \/>Radio usage, mayday call, Lifeboat and helicopter rescue MHD<br \/>Shout Man overboard<br \/>Keep pointing at the casualty<br \/>Throw MOB equipment<br \/>Press MOB button on GPS<br \/>Manoeuvre vessel<br \/>Early Mayday call<br \/>Retrieval equipment\/Methods of retrieval<br \/><strong>Abandon Ship<\/strong><br \/>Mayday<br \/>Lifejackets, flares<br \/>Seasickness pills and water<br \/>Warm clothes<br \/>Grab bag<br \/>Liferaft is the last resort but prepare it early<br \/>Try not to get wet, step into life raft<br \/><strong>Entering the water<\/strong><br \/>Wear lifejacket<br \/>Hold jacket and cover airway<br \/>if possible enter slowly<br \/>Grab bag Waterproof floating container<br \/>VHF &amp; GPS Water &amp; Energy bars<br \/>Torch Multitool<br \/>First aid Kit medication<br \/>(Phone, Credit card, car keys, passport)<br \/>Lists on the internet<br \/><strong>Life raft what\u2019s inside? Typical leisure raft<\/strong><br \/>Knife, Bailer, Sponges \u2013 collect condensation for drinking,<br \/>Sea anchor, paddles, repair kit, throwing line<br \/>Life raft righting Stand on cylinder<br \/>Take care with moving &amp; handling<br \/><strong>SEA SURVIVAL POOL SESSION<\/strong><br \/>We all like to think we\u2019re competent on the water.<br \/>We\u2019ve got the kit.<br \/>We\u2019ve got the training.<br \/>We\u2019ve watched the YouTube from the sofa.<br \/>But no one plans to use a life raft.<br \/>It\u2019s the most expensive bit of equipment you hope never to use.<br \/>Sailors trust their boats.<br \/>Divers trust their buddies.<br \/>But when things go wrong, they go wrong fast \u2014 and cold water doesn\u2019t care how many qualifications you\u2019ve got.<br \/>Tonight It\u2019s about answering one simple question:<br \/>If you had 60 seconds before abandoning your vessel\u2026 would you actually know what to do?<br \/>Would you inflate at the right moment?<br \/>Could you turn a raft over alone?<br \/>Could you get in safely?<br \/>Would your lifejacket fit properly?<br \/>Survival at sea isn\u2019t about strength \u2014 it\u2019s about preparation and staying calm when your brain is trying to panic.<br \/>Tonight we\u2019re going to: Inflate a few rafts<br \/>Get wet<br \/>Turn them over<br \/>Climb in<br \/>And maybe prove that it\u2019s harder than we all imagine.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 people attended, from SOCA, BOSG and 2 local diving clubs. All that attended agreed it was a worthwhile event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life Raft &amp; Survival Quiz<\/strong><br \/><strong>1 Should you inflate a life raft inside the cabin?<\/strong><br \/>A) Yes, safer out of the wind<br \/>B) Only in calm conditions<br \/>C) No<br \/>Answer: C (Unless you want a very expensive orange interior<br \/>redesign.)<br \/><strong>2 If your boat is still floating but disabled, should you:<\/strong><br \/>A) Immediately abandon ship<br \/>B) Stay with the vessel if safe<br \/>C) Swim for shore<br \/>Answer: B. A boat is bigger, easier to spot, and usually safer than a<br \/>raft.<br \/><strong>3 In UK waters (10\u201315\u00b0C), how long before cold water seriously <\/strong><strong>affects you?<\/strong><br \/>A) 10\u201315 minutes<br \/>B) 1 hour<br \/>C) 3 hours<br \/>Answer: A. Cold shock and swim failure happen frighteningly fast.<br \/><strong>4 Can one reasonably fit adult right an inverted life raft alone?<\/strong><br \/>A) Yes<br \/>B) No<br \/>Answer: Yes \u2014 but technique matters.
